The Boothbay Region Peace and Justice group invites the community to join in a candlelight vigil Wednesday, Nov. 11, Veteran’s Day, to honor troops who lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, soldiers still serving there and veterans of these and previous wars. The vigil, an annual event, will be held at 6 p.m. on the lawn of the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. Opening statements on the purpose of the vigil – to honor those who have sacrificed so much in the service of their country – will be followed by reading aloud the names of Maine’s servicemen and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. There will be candlelit luminaries for each name listed, a bell will be sounded and there will be a moment of silence after each name is read. Veterans and their families are, of course, invited to attend the vigil along with the general public. The vigil, intended as a non-political event, will offer an opportunity for members of the public to make personal statements if they wish, to read from appropriate poetry or other written material and/or to reflect in silence on the sacrifices made by these servicemen and women and their families. All are welcome to attend the vigil, which will last about one hour. The vigil will close with singing the Navy Hymn with verses for other branches of service. Copies of the hymn will be distributed. Participants can bring their own candles, or extras will be supplied.
